Are some of these remote hosting companies like Host Gator any good or should I spend more and go with an in town provider? Any recommendations for remote if so?

Host Gator is great. You can also have others too like:

Bluehost
Fast Comet
Hosting.co.in
Hostgator
Inmotion Hosting

No doubt, all the given sites are good. But I recommend you to easy.gr. Their service is too good. I have a very good experience with them. So you can go with this website.

Local host is the current host in which you are logged in. Remote host is the host to which you are trying to connect from the local host . You have logged in with your credentials to your computer COM-A and now you go to start and type-in “mstsc” …an RDP session will open …you type in the ip of COM-B (192.168.

If you are referring to a Local Server, this means that you have a server setup on your current machine. When the server is Remote, this just means that it is on another computer.
