An ad group contains one or more ads which target a shared set of keywords. You set a bid, or price, to be used when an ad group's keywords trigger an ad to appear. This is called a cost-per-click (CPC) bid. You can also set prices for individual keywords within the ad group.

The “Ad group” tab takes some of the guess work out of determining how to group together and separate keywords. In addition, these ad group recommendations can be saved and added directly to your current campaigns, further easing the process of creating ad groups and adding keywords.

An ad group can be compared to a ‘folder’ within a Google AdWords or PPC advertising campaign. It usually contains related keywords or phrases with multiple match types, as well as one or more advertisements, negative keywords, placements, topics and/or target groups.

A successful Google AdWords campaign should have a large number of ad groups within a campaign, so these can be individually tested with effective and/or relevant advertisements, keywords and settings.
