How many times does Google change their algorithm?

It depends on Google as to how frequently it releases updates. Algorithms are not launched frequently but they keep updating the existing ones for enhancing search results.

It is like what open source apps says. When it is ready / needed. Google constantly updates their algorithm. Only big changes are announced.

Bigger updates like Panda, Penguin etc need users to change things. Sometimes small, sometimes big. Otherwise, Google is mostly silent of their changes. It could be because it is their secret technology
