BBCode: Bulletin Board Code
It is a lightweight markup language used to format posts in many message boards and on sites.

BBcode was widely used and probably still used in bulletin boards (aka. forums), thus BB in BBCode stands for *bulletin board*, it was manly developed to help people write much rich content in their posts in Forums, its main purpose is to be easy, allow only specific formating, decoration and styling or adding images or emotions and of course to be safe not allowing iframes or injecting some java/actionscript codes in the post. BBCode is not similar to HTML and cannot compared to it. BBCode is just a formating syntax that's easy and safe to use which get converted to HTML by the application (e.g. phpBB, MyBB, vBulletin) and not by the browser, the browser cannot interpret BBCode by its own.

BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. Whether you can actually use BBCode in your posts on the forum is determined by the administrator. In addition you can disable BBCode on a per post basis via the posting form.
