If you increase the length of your published content and add some points then google treated your content as an updated content and give some ranking benefits.

It will definitely affect SEO on Positive and Negative ways. If you add high quality content in the website then it will help to increase the ranking of the website. If you add any duplicate, irrelevant or low quality content in your webpages than it may losses it ranking.

If same content is edited to make it more optimized then it will be good for ranking as it will improve SEO. If you edit the content to add low quality content, then it will negatively affect SEO of your website.

Depends upon what you are doing with it, if you're upgrading your content quality you'll get a boost in ranking, and you'll do something silly and downgrade your content you'll lose rank.

Well, it depends on the quality of the content and if you use the same content by re-editing it and publish it then it doesn't mean that is different content. Thematically that is similar to the actual one why users want to read the same content again with new words. Why?
So, it affects not directly but indirectly it does.

If you are updating quality content then yes it will positively affect SEO ranking. But if low quality content is updated then it can adversely affect you website ranking.

Now SEO is all about Content, so quality content do matters to improve the ranking and traffic of the website.
