Cohort analysis is a subset of behavioral analytics that takes the data from a given dataset and rather than looking at all users as one unit, it breaks them into related groups for analysis. The Cohort Analysis report lets you isolate and analyze cohort behavior.

Cohort Analysis in Google Analytics is a weird thing. Web Analytics tools are built to track things that happen on the site and do it just fine, while there's the other part of the equation: out-of-site activity. Meaning that Google Analytics is practically useless when it comes to analyzing what and why happens when your users log out and leave your site.

Cohort analysis allows us to identify relationships between the characteristics of a population and that population's behavior. Looking at the average income over the five years after graduation in comparison to the income of the 2011 students over the same interval allows for a unique apples-to-apples comparison of these groups. In this case, there appears to be a relationship between a student's year of graduation and their income
