You can rely on your server to return a standard 404 page, but it might not be attractive, and won't be branded with your website. A custom 404 page can be branded with your site and provide helpful information.

A good custom 404 page will help people find the information they're looking for, as well as providing other helpful content and encouraging them to explore your site further.

Creating a custom 404 page is a great way to let your visitors know what went wrong while retaining the unique style of your site.

A 404 error is triggered when someone tries to go to a page that doesn't exist. This typically happens if

1) They bookmarked a page or followed a link to a page that used to exist but no longer does.

2) They accidentally typed in the wrong url.

*They mistyped the Web address (URL) of the page they were trying to reach; or
*They followed a link to a page that no longer exists on your site.

Create custom 404 pages. A 404 page is what a user sees when they try to reach a non-existent page on your site (because they've clicked on a broken link, the page has been deleted, or they've mistyped a URL).

A 404 error is an HTTP status code that means that the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn't be found on their server. The 404 Not Found error might appear for several reasons even though no real issue exists, so sometimes a simple refresh will often load the page you were looking for. The most common method is to retry the web page by pressing F5, clicking the refresh/reload button, or trying the URL from the address bar again.
