On-page refers to both the content and HTML source code of a page that can be optimized, as opposed to off-page SEO which refers to links and other external signals.
Off page SEO refers to techniques that can be used to improve the position of a web site in the search engine results page (SERPs). Many people associate off-page SEO with link building but it is not only that.

SEO techniques can be classified into two groups:

On page SEO
Off page SEO

On page SEO deals with aspects on your website that can be optimized for search engines. Off page SEO involves aspects on other websites on the internet that can be optimized to improve the ranking of your website on leading search engines. It’s important to understand the difference between on page and off page SEO.

On-page SEO

On page SEO is what you do on your own website and individual pages in order to grow the traffic. It is the first thing that every webmaster should do when writing a new post or optimizing their websites. On-page optimization needs to be constantly revised, if you want to maintain or improve the ranking. In this technique, the role of keywords or key phrases that the user might type has a prominent position. It includes headings, page titles, domain names and images. But all these elements have to be search-engine friendly. The size of the site should not be too large or too small. It should have genuine, interesting and relevant content. The main components involved in on-page optimization are listed below:

Headings
Title of the page
Meta description and tags
Image and pictures
URL structure and domain information
User-friendly navigation and quick loading
Fresh and quality content
Optimized external and internal links

Title optimization

The most important web optimization element is the title tag. The title tag should be a short but descriptive one, which will help the visitors learn more about you and your business. The title tag is indexed on the search engines, so the title tag has greater importance than other components. Your title should be good enough to attract users looking for specific information.

Meta tag

Meta tag is a short description about your website, its focus areas and the services you provide. In the Meta tag it’s important that the title, keyword and descriptions written are distinct from other sites.

Content writing

Content writing is a very important feature to drive more traffic to your site.Regularly updating your content with fresh information, and appropriate keywords and phrases increases the ranking of your site. Good content is important for your articles, newspaper, blogs, and press releases as well.

Keyword optimization

Adding keywords to your site is important but keyword stuffing can make your site unreadable.

Link optimization

Proper link building improves your site’s quality. There should be effective external and internal links to secure high-ranking in search engines. The link should be taken from a genuine and unique site.

Image optimization

Image optimization can make your site unique but it should be done according to certain criteria. The first one is the file size and loading speed of an individual image and the second is proper file naming and optimization. Search engine spiders can only read text and not images, so special tags are used to make them comprehensible to search engines.

Off page SEO

Unlike on page optimization, off page depends on another web page to improve your site or blog. Off-page optimization deals with link building factors. It’s an ongoing process and needs regular new links that are given priority by search engines. In this technique if you obtain a high quality link, then your site can rank higher. Strategic link building increases the traffic to your website and its position in Google.

Off page SEO is a combination of social media, social bookmarking and link building.

Link building

The ranking of your website depends upon link building, not on the quantity of links but the quality of links. Adding external links to your site can increase the quality of your site and make it rank higher. It is not the number of links pointing to your site that is the important consideration, but the websites from where these links come. You need to add links from websites that are rated high.

Social media marketing

Almost everyone has a social media account either on Twitter or Facebook or Google+. Effective social media marketing will make your profile more attractive and more people can find your profile and visit you. Social media optimization is a very efficient method for promoting online business.

Social bookmarking

Social bookmarks can be passed on to innumerable users and thus generate significantly increased traffic to your website. Search engines index top social bookmarking websites, and this can help your website increase its ranking. You can bookmark your pages, creating backlinks to your content. This is a great strategy for brand building, and your content can go viral if it gets shared widely among users.

On page and off page optimization are the two important words in connection with search engine optimization. Both of them have vital importance in the field of online business. You need to understand the difference between on page and off page SEO to implement the right strategies.

On-page SEO includes the server and google settings as well:

HTTP vs HTTPS
You need to enable HTTPS on your website. An HTTPS enabled site ranks much higher with the same amount and quality of backlinks in its SERP calculation

Preferred website “WWW . DOM . XX” or “DOM . XX”
Preferred domain needs to be applied to the 4 domain possibilities you have e.g. HTTP and HTTPS with or without WWW e.g. your preffered domain can be http: // www . domain . xx or https : // domain . xx. If a preferred domain has been selected in Goggle webmaster tool, google tends to collate all links from the different domain possibilities into one single container. This is good for you SERP calculations to gather all link juice to your actual used version of your domain.

AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages (by google))
AMP tend to multiply SERP values by a factor of 3 to 4 when placing websites in search results

Avoid landing page redirects
This rule triggers when PageSpeed Insights detects that you have more than one redirect from the given url to the final landing page. So do not use redirects on your landing page.

Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
This rule triggers when PageSpeed Insights detects that your HTML references a blocking external JavaScript file in the above-the-fold portion of your page.
Before the browser can render a page it has to build the webpage tree by parsing the HTML markup. Make sure that only necessary CSS and JS are loaded or implement async load of JS files.
Learn more about removing render-blocking resources.

Enable compression
This rule triggers when PageSpeed Insights detects that compressible resources were served without gzip compression. All modern browsers support and automatically negotiate gzip compression for all HTTP requests. Enabling gzip compression can reduce the size of the transferred response by up to 90%, which can significantly reduce the amount of time to download the resource
Learn more about enabling compression.

Minify CSS, HTML & JavaScript
This rules triggers when PageSpeed Insights detects that the size of one of your resources could be reduced through minification.
Learn more about minifying CSS, HTML & JavaScriptS

Optimize images
Google comes with suggestions and you can even download you optimized website image pack and upload to your website.

Reduce server response time
This rule triggers when PageSpeed Insights detects that your server response time is above 200 ms.
Server response time measures how long it takes to load the necessary HTML to begin rendering the page from your server, subtracting out the network latency between Google and your server.

Leverage browser caching
Setting an expiry date or a maximum age in the HTTP headers for static resources instructs the browser to load previously downloaded resources from local disk rather than over the network.
Leverage browser caching for the following cacheable resources:

Prioritize visible content
Your page requires additional network round trips to render the above-the-fold content. For best performance, reduce the amount of HTML needed to render above-the-fold content.
The entire HTML response was not sufficient to render the above-the-fold content. This usually indicates that additional resources, loaded after HTML parsing, were required to render above-the-fold content.
Prioritize visible content that is needed for rendering above-the-fold by including it directly in the HTML response

Now on to creating good quality content and publish that on blogs, participate in forums, etc.... and build up traffic for your site and awareness of your site!

Good luck
