You'll have to use your images in jpg format and reduce file size. Besides, you should use alt tags correctly, name your images narratively, use image sitemaps, optimize thumbnails, and so on.

Yes, it can be done via several plugins such as Lazy Load, I have installed it on my almost every website and works fine.

There are a number of WordPress plugins for Image optimization (https://www.cloudways.com/blog/wordpress-image-optimization-plugin-wpcompress/). You can try:
- WP Compress
- WP Smush It
- ShortPixel

On a side note, always set the correct dimensions before uploading an image to a WordPress site and choose the correct file format. Browsers load JPG, PNG, GIF more quickly as compared to BMP, TIFF.
