SEO

SEO is the process of optimizing your web site for the purpose of getting free traffic from search engines. An optimized web site is more easily understood by Search engine crawlers, so there are more chances of ranking higher in SERPS.

SEM

SEM is the marketing process with a goal of getting more visibility in search engines either by getting more free traffic (SEO) or paid traffic. Many people start with a good Web site and invest in SEO, but don’t necessarily follow through with another very important component; and that is search engine marketing.

SEO and SEM both are part of digital marketing activities, both are effective techniques for ranking.
different in both is that SEO is free, natural, organic activities.
when SEM is paid marketing or PPC, you have to pay on a click in your link in the Search engine.

You can set your budget in SEM and bid on keywords, can buy keywords in the bid.
for example, keywords that bid is 5 rs
you selected it then now you pay 5 rs on every click.
paid marketing is faster than organic results
