It depends on your choice which one suits you better like if you want to deindex a page or directory from Google’s Search Results then I suggest that you use a “Noindex” meta tag rather than a robots.txt whereas Robots.txt files are best for disallowing a whole section of a site, such as a category whereas a meta tag is more efficient at disallowing single files and pages.

Both Robots.txt and Robots Meta tag are used for the same purpose. To tell Google, which directory of the website, folder or pages should be avoided from crawling. The only difference is, in robots.txt file you need to just mention the folder and url of the webite itself in Robots.txt file, which should not be crawled. However, in case of Robots Meta Tag, you need to mention no follow and no index meta tag in each and every page itself that these pages should not be crawled.

In simpler way, it's better to use robots.txt file rather than using robots meta tag.

Robots meta tag gives option that crawl or not crawl specific page.It also informs about do-follow and no-follow links on the web page.whereas robots.txt is a list of a directories which mainly used for restriction about crawling of a specific web pages.so both used for different purposes and not better than each other.

Robots.txt is a standard used by websites to communicate with web crawlers and other web robots. The standard specifies how to inform the web robot about which areas of the website should not be processed or scanned.

To check which pages are crawled into the search engine and which are not you just need to type in URL section as,

domain name/robots.txt
Meta robots tag is a tag that tells search engines what to follow and what not to follow. It is a piece of code in the <head> section of your webpage. It's a simple code that gives you the power to decide about what pages you want to hide from search engine crawlers and what pages you want them to index and look at.

I think search engine gives more preference to robots.txt for website crawling.

Robots.txt is better compared to meta robots tag. Robots.txt is a text file that lists webpages which contain instructions for search engines robots. The file lists webpages that are allowed and disallowed from search engine crawling.

In general terms, if you want to de index a page or directory from Google’s Search Results then we suggest that you use a “No index” meta tag rather than a robots.txt directive as by using this method the next time your site is crawled your page will be de indexed, meaning that you won’t have to send a URL removal request. However, you can still use a robots.txt directive coupled with a Webmaster Tools page removal to accomplish this.

I think there is no huge difference its convenient for your website. You can use any of that but most of the cases robot.txt is used.

Meta Robots tag is much better as it helps in forcing the search engine crawlers not to index and display the hidden pages in your server. The Meta tag option tells bots not to index individual files, whereas Robots.txt can be used to restrict access to entire directories. Both are supported by all crawlers.
