From an SEO point of view here is the definition of a canonical URL: Canonical URL: the search engine friendly URL that you want the search engines to treat as authoritative. In other words, a canonical URL is the URL that you want visitors to see. Quite often canonical URLs were used to describe the homepage.

A canonical tag (aka "rel canonical") is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the master copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or "duplicate" content appearing on multiple URLs. Practically speaking, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.

it is the attributes in HTML tag, the benefits of canonical tag is protect your content from duplication and prevent users from multiple URL.it suggest to search engine crawler that content in URL is original.basicaly it used when two or more URL display the same content, that’s not good for your content so it needs to use canonical tag.
search engine crawler can be a confuse after seen same URL or pages in the site that, it can't decide that which is the original and which is duplicate. so canonical tags remove his confusion about duplication of the page. if you don't use the canonical tag, the search engine might ban your page.

What is Canonical URL?

A canonical URL is a your preferred URL. Still not making sense? We understand, so let us explain. URLs can have multiple variables and as such, to avoid issues like duplicate content, Google asks that the webmaster chooses one to use. Let us look at our homepage and see what variables are available:

digital-muscle.com.au

https://www.digital-muscle.com.au/

Using these stems you and depending on the type of server you use, variables can include /index.html, /index.asp, even having a forward slash at the end of a URL will count as a separate page.

Thanks

What is Canonical URL?

A canonical URL refers to an HTML link element, with the attribute of rel="canonical", found in the <head> element of your webpage. It specifies to search engines your preferred URL. What that means is that the canonical URL element informs Google and other search engines to crawl a website, and what URL to index that specific page content under.

The rel=canonical element, often called the “canonical link”, is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues. It does this by specifying the “canonical URL”, the “preferred” version of a web page – the original source, even. Using it well improves a site's SEO.

A canonical tag is a way of telling search engines that a specific URL represents the unique copy of a page. Using the canonical tag prevents problems caused by identical or*****duplicate*****content appearing on multiple URL s. Basically, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in Google search results.

Doe’s it matter in websites google ranking?
Duplicate content is a complicated subject, but when search engines crawl many URL s with identical or similar content, it can cause a number of SEO problems. First of all, if search crawlers/robots have to wade through too much duplicate content, they may miss some of your unique content. Second, large-scale duplication may reduce your ranking ability. Finally, even if your content does rank, search engines may pick the wrong URL as the*****original. Using canonicalization helps you control your duplicate content.

The problems with URL s in 2018
You might be thinking that canonicalization nothing that you have to worry about. The problem is that humans, tend to understand a page as a concept, such as your homepage & For search engines, every unique URL is a separate page.

For a human, all of these URL s represent a single page. To a search crawler/ Robots, every single one of these URL s is a unique*****page. Even in this example, we can see there are 4 copies of the homepage. In reality, though, this is just a small sample
of the variations you might encounter.

An accepted tag (otherwise known as "rel authoritative") is a method for telling web crawlers that an explicit URL speaks to the ace duplicate of a page. Utilizing the authoritative tag anticipates issues caused by indistinguishable or "copy" content showing up on various URLs.

A canonical tag is a signal in a web page which simply says: “I'm a copy of this other web page which can be found over there…” This HTML element is added into the code of a page and helps prevent duplicate content issues by telling Google and other search engines the preferred version of a page.

A canonical URL is a URL that Google sees as the “master” version of a set of duplicate or near-duplicate pages. Think of it as the difference between an original piece of art and its copies or prints. This canonical URL is what Google will index and potentially return to users in Google search.
