Well basically the difference is that internal links are usually what you control by deciding which of your onsite internal pages will link to your other pages and what anchor-text will they use. Having a solid Interlinking strategy is a vital part of any SEO-Campaign and you should carefully plan your “Most Interlinked” pages based on your keyword-focus.

On the other side of the Equation you have the Inbound links that are coming from external sources (other blogs, Link directories, Social Mentions etc…) those are the unbiased “votes” that other external sources give to your page by linking to it from their own content. those types of links are outside of your direct control and are much harder to get.

The most important relationship between the two types of links are - there should be a direct correlation between what your Internal links are saying about a given page on your site and what external sources are saying - the Anchor-Texts coming to any given page on your site should be in the same semantic context.

So for example if your Internal links that point to Page_A have “car insurance quotes” as their Anchor-Text and the external (i.e Inbound) links have “Home Mortgage calculator” then you’ll have a hard time getting this page to rank in the SERPs as you have a “semantic inconsistency” in terms of what you’re saying about your page and what others are saying.

An inbound link is a hyperlink back to your site from another Web site. The one constant and reliable strategy in search engine optimization is that sites with a variety of high quality backlinks rank higher in the search engine results pages.

Inbound links or commonly known as “backlinks” are the links pointing to your site and search engines like Google like it when you have thousands of links pointing to your site but sometimes Google penalizes you for it too if you have poor quality and irrelevant backlinks pointing to your site. Yes, because you have no authority over the inbound links which others post for you.

An inbound link (or backlink) is simply a link to a third party website that directs to your domain. The recipient of such a link is usually the one who refers to it as an inbound link.

Inbound links differ from outgoing links (those on your website that link to other sites) and internal links (those that link to other pages on the same website).
