The "Hummingbird" update was the first major update to Google's search algorithm since the 2010 "Caffeine" search architecture upgrade, but even that was limited primarily to improving the indexing of information rather than sorting through information.

Hummingbird is about synonyms but also about context. Google always had synonyms, but with Hummingbird it is also able to judge context - thereby judging the intent of a person carrying out a search, to determine what they are trying to find out.

Google launched its new platform the Hummingbird in September 2013 with a totally new concept for its search engines. Panda and Penguin were actually updates of older algorithms but Hummingbird is a new algorithm that takes into account more than 200 factors before affecting search rankings. While previously, searches were based on keywords, this platform considers not just a word but the meaning of a query and depends on a whole sentence to arrive at rankings. This change was made keeping the mobile market in focus and is not surprising considering the exponential boom of smart phones and tablets now.

The Hummingbird will take a search engine query using long-tailed keywords and try to decipher the context of the question rather than chase the specific keywords within the question.
The Hummingbird is an entirely new algorithm. It approaches search engine queries in a brand new and intelligent way utilizing new technology combined with older features of the existing algorithms.

Hummingbird is the new algorithm made up more than 200 factors that can affect ranking and search. New search technique adds "conversational search" being added to the Hummingbird algorithm, which is designed to focus on the meaning of a phrase, rather than individual keywords. Using of conversational search, you can easily search that you want to know about it.
Hummingbird signaled Google’s commitment to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the intent of searchers’ queries with the goal of matching them to more relevant results. Hummingbird algorithm is called to better deal with conversational queries, considering the growing number of mobile search users and voice searches.

Google Hummingbird algorithm update is all about improving results for "conversational search", instead of just looking for key words it helps user search specific questions. This concept is called semantic search. The Hummingbird approach should be inspirational to anyone managing and planning content. A content strategy should be designed to answer their needs, not just provide them with facts.
The Hummingbird update was a major update to Google's search algorithm since the 2010 "Caffeine Update". Unlike previous search algorithms which would focus on each individual word in the search query, The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.
Hummingbird places greater emphasis on page content making search results more relevant and pertinent and ensuring that Google delivers users to the most appropriate page of a website, rather than to a home page or top level page.
