The EMD Update (Exact Match Domain) is a filter Google launched in September 2012 to prevent poor quality sites from ranking well simply because they had words that match search terms in their domain names.

EMD stands for Exact Match Domains. The exact match domains update is a new filter aimed at ensuring that low-quality websites do not attain a high Page Rank (PR) and rise high in Google’€™s SERPs (search engine results pages) just because such websites have the relevant search term in the domain names. Google states that EMD, like the other filters (Google Panda and Google Penguin), will be updated regularly.

Google EMD update (Exact match domain) first came in 29th Sep 2012. This update is similar to other algorithmic updates like Panda and Penguin.

This update affected “exact match” domains with low quality content.

What are Exact Match Domains?

An exact match domain is a domain name that exactly matches the search query.

For years, exact match domains were a way to get top rankings on search engines. Webmasters used to buy exact match domains to dominate the search rankings and these domains ranked high on the SERP with low quality content.

To overcome this situation, Google rolled out an algorithm to exterminate such low quality sites. After this update, a number of exact match domains disappeared from the first 100 spots on Google.

Exact match domains are intensively used in SEO because search engines give high importance to domain names as an indication of a website topic. Thus, for many queries, a relatively large proportion of first page results are occupied by EMD. A lot of SEOs (folks who specialize in search engine optimization) and owners of low-quality exact match domains are upset about the EMD update. They lost rankings and the money that went along with those rankings.
