Meta elements are tags used in HTML and XHTML documents to provide structured metadata about a Web page. They are part of a web page's head section. Multiple Meta elements with different attributes can be used on the same page.

A meta tag is a tag (that is, a coding statement) in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that describes some aspect of the contents of a Web page. There are many meta tags and html-tags and obviously they don't all influence the search result.

The information that you provide in a meta tag is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it.Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag.

You can add meta tags in different ways, depending on the tool you use to create and update your site.

You can also add your meta tags to your pages by hand. Meta tags should be placed within the <head> tags near the beginning of your page code, like this:
<head>
<title>your business name and page title<title>
<meta name="description" content="a description of your site">
<meta name="keywords" content="relevant keywords about your site">
</head>

Meta tags refer to meta title tags and meta descriptions, each of which provides Google and viewers with information about the web-page in search results. A meta title tag appears at the top of your browser and serves as the title of your page; title tags should be less than 60 characters and, if space allows, include the name of your business. A meta description appears beneath a SERP listing and is a way to entice viewers to visit a page. Meta descriptions should be less than 155 characters, so as to display in-full on a results page, and feature a call to action, such as “Learn more here.” Meta tags should also include a company name and a target keyword that corresponds to the page, as Google crawls meta tags when indexing.

Meta tags are a significant part of website optimization. These are words that are hidden in a site’s HTML code. They are created for search engines so they can read them and immediately know what a website is about.

Most important meta tags include title tags and meta description.

Let’s start with a title tag, which is the most crucial part when it comes to SEO. It's a clickable element that simply describes the content of a website and which is shown on SERPs (search engine result pages).

Title tags should consist of maximum 60 words. The longer titles may by not fully presented in the browser. Basically, Google shows titles that have less than 600 pixels. That’s why it’s hard to define the exact number of characters that will create a fully displayed title. Some letters are bigger and wider than others, therefore, you should always check if your title fits in.

Meta tags provide information about your Web page to search engine robots so that the search engine can better understand what your site is about. Meta tags provide this information in a format that the web crawlers/spiders that visit your site can understand.

Meta tags are snippets of text that describe a page's content; the meta tags don't appear on the page itself, but only in the page's code. We all know tags from blog culture, and meta tags are more or less the same thing, little content descriptors that help tell search engines what a web page is about.

Meta tags are a piece of text which describes the web pages’ content in detail. They don’t appear on the page, rather only in pages’ code. They do affect SEO. If you want to view what are the Meta tags on a website, simply right-click anywhere on the page and select “View Page Source.”

Meta tags provide information about the webpage in the HTML of the document. This information is called "metadata" and while it is not displayed on the page itself, it can be read by search engines and web crawlers.

The <meta> tag defines metadata about an HTML document. Metadata is data (information) about data.

<meta> tags always go inside the <head> element, and are typically used to specify character set, page description, keywords, author of the document, and viewport settings.

Metadata will not be displayed on the page, but is machine parsable.

Meta tags are the words that are hidden in your code. People browsing your site will just not be able to see them. The search engines still read them for it to have a simple, summarized idea of what your site is about and what exactly your keywords are. There are three important parts of Meta tags that you can use: title, description and keywords. The importance of meta tags is that the search engines read them in order to compare if these keywords and the description are related to the visible content. Are your keywords present in your webpage? Is your meta description related to your content and your site’s niche? There is a certain weight in your meta tags that the search engines see, that being the reason, wouldn’t you want to do everything in order to bring your page a little bit higher in the SERPs? That’s exactly the reason why meta tags are important.

Meta tags are snippets of code that tell search engines important information about your web page, such as how they should display it in search results. They also tell web browsers how to display it to visitors.
Every web page has meta tags, but they’re only visible in the HTML code.
