A sitemap is a file where you can list the web pages of your site to tell Google and other search engines about the organization of your site content. Search engine web crawlers like Googlebot read this file to more intelligently crawl your site.

Also, your sitemap can provide valuable metadata associated with the pages you list in that sitemap: Metadata is information about a web page, such as when the page was last updated, how often the page is changed, and the importance of the page relative to other URLs on the site.

A Sitemap is an XML file that's full of your individual webpage's URLs. It's like an archive of each webpage on your web site. This file should be easily discoverable in your website so as for search engine crawlers to stumble upon it. Sitemaps are essential to having search engines crawl and index the web site in order that the content within it are often ranked within the search results.
