NAP is an abbreviation for Name, Address, Phone Number.

NAP is important for businesses that are trying to rank for local searches. That is, businesses such as services (plumbers, lawyers, dentists, and such). Instead of just noting backlinks to such sites, Google wants to see other websites referring to a local business by their contact information. It helps Google determine how popular a local business is.

For websites that just do business online (such as a site that sold downloadable files), NAP isn't important. Such a site does business online, to anyone anywhere in the world, and the address of their business isn't important.
