A pingback is one of four types of linkback methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles.

Pingbacks are specific to the WordPress community, so if your blog is not hosted on WordPress I guess you can be excused for not knowing what a pingback is. Similar to comments, pingbacks are a way in which one blogger can link his or her blog to another blog. If you’re talking about pingbacks and another blogger is talking about trackbacks, it makes sense that you’d want to link to that blog, right? That’s why WordPress created the pingback, see!

Pingback allows you to notify other bloggers that you have linked to their article on your website. Although there are some minor technical differences, a trackback is basically the same things as a pingback.

A pingback is a special type of comment that's created when you link to another blog post, as long as the other blog is set to accept pingbacks. To create a pingback, just link to another WordPress blog post from within a blog post or a page on your own site.

Trackbacks are a way to notify legacy blog systems that you've linked to them. If you link to a WordPress blog they'll be notified automatically using pingbacks, no other action necessary. Think of trackbacks as the equivalent of acknowledgements and references at the end of an academic paper or chapter in a text book.

A pingback is a special, WordPress-exclusive comment that’s created when you link to another blog post, as long as the other blog is set to accept pingbacks. Similar to comments, pingbacks are a way in which one blogger can link his or her blog to another blog. For instance, if another WordPress site links or references your article, you will get a pingback notification that will display as a comment on the blog post they linked to.

A pingback is a kind of comment created when you link to another blog post where pingbacks are enabled. To create a pingback, you can just link to another blog post. If that post has active pingbacks, the blog owner will see a pingback appear in their comments section that they can approve.

Pingbacks in WordPress have evolved from the use of trackbacks. When someone links to your post, youíll get a pingback showing up in your comments moderation queue from the linking site.

In regards to defining what a"pingback" is, even the internet blogging community is a bit less sure of the significance.

A pingback is a type of comment that's created when you link to another blog post where pingbacks are enabled. The best way to think about pingbacks is as remote comments: Person A posts something on his blog. Person B posts on her own blog, linking to Person A's post.
