However I would say that it depends, I agree with you that using different domains per language would be a better option, especially in SEO terms.

The first thing you need to do is to make both domains to point to the same WordPress installation, this DNS part is the hard part. Then, you need to go to WPM > Languages > URL format and choose this option within your domain.
