The difference is that XML sitemaps are written for search engines and HTML sitemaps are written for humans. An XML sitemap is specifically written for search engine spiders. ... An HTML sitemap enables lost human users to find a page on your site that they are looking for

The difference is that XML sitemaps are written for search engines and HTML sitemaps are written for humans. An XML sitemap is specifically written for search engine spiders. A search engine spider can quickly and easily extract all the important pieces of information about your site by looking at the XML file.

A HTML sitemap comes in a language that is understandable. Everything you find in HTML sitemap is written in text format.
An XML sitemap comes in a language that is difficult to understand. Everything you find in an XML sitemap is written in numerical and with special terms(similar to what you find in a keypad).

HTML sitemap is a plain text sitemap used by browsers to know and surf through your website pages. XML sitemap is a coded sitemap used to submit in webmaster tool to help spiders crawl them and index the webpages in search engines.

The thing that matters is that XML sitemaps are composed for web indexes and HTML sitemaps are composed for people. A XML sitemap is explicitly composed for web search tool bugs. An internet searcher bug can rapidly and effectively extricate all the significant snippets of information about your website by taking a gander at the XML record.

HTML sitemaps are designed for humans to navigate the website.

XML Sitemaps on the other hand are designed for search engines to know the site structure.

The simplest explanation is that XML is primarily for the search engines while HTML is written for the users.
