Mobile-first indexing means Google predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Historically, the index primarily used the desktop version of a page's content when evaluating the relevance of a page to a user's query.

Mobile-first indexing means that we'll use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our — primarily mobile — users find what they're looking for.” In short, Google is crawling the web as a smartphone browser would render your website, as opposed to how a desktop browser would.

Google’s Mobile First Indexing is live from this month (March 2018). Initially Google has planned to move all the sites to mobile first indexing in the starting of 2018, as development of the indexing stage and shift preparatory steps were not completed, there is a delay in this process but now it is live.

According to Mobile-First Indexing, Google will consider the mobile version instead of the desktop version for site evaluation, indexing, and ranking. Ranked and analyzed of all new Websites will be done on the basis of mobile-First Indexing from 1 July 2019.
