In HTML and XHTML, an image map is a list of coordinates relating to a specific image, created in order to hyperlink areas of the image to different destinations. For example, a map of the world may have each country hyperlinked to further information about that country.

It used to be that nearly every website had an image map on most of their pages. Many sites used image maps for their navigation, and a lot of sites liked to come up with a visual theme for their site that would be displayed through an image map.

Image map is a DOM element defined with the <map> tag. It is used in conjunction with <img> elements to specify an image with clickable areas. The <map> tag has multiple <area> elements, and each of them defines a separate clickable area in the image map.

The idea behind an image map is that you should be able to perform different actions depending on where in the image you click.

To create an image map you need an image, and a map containing some rules that describe the clickable areas.

In Web page development, an image map is a graphic image defined so that a user can click on different areas of the image and be linked to different destinations. You make an image map by defining each of the sensitive areas in terms of their x and y coordinates (that is, a certain horizontal distance and a certain vertical distance from the left-hand corner of the image). With each set of coordinates, you specify a Uniform Resource Locator or Web address that will be linked to when the user clicks on that area.

This is a very primitive example of a client-side image map. Unlike an entire graphic that serves as a link, an image map is a graphic that usually has two or more clickable areas that take the user to different sites. A client-side image map does not require a separate program running on a server to function.

In image mapping an image is specified with certain set of coordinates inside the image which act as hyperlink areas to different destinations. It is different from an image link since in image linking, an image can be used to serve a single link or destination whereas in a mapped image, different coordinates of the image can serve different links or destinations.

An image map is an image with clickable areas. The required name attribute of the <map> element is associated with the <img>'s usemap attribute and creates a relationship between the image and the map. The <map> element contains a number of <area> elements, that defines the clickable areas in the image map.
