A trackback URL is where somebody posts a link to their site on your site. In return, they have posted a link to your site on their site and have copied an article you have written.

A trackback allows one website to notify another about an update. It is one of four types of linkback methods for website authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to their articles.

A trackback URL is essentially a recognition of someone (in the blogging software, in particular, Wordpress) commenting, etc..it can also be used to alert the two blog owners of more content etc... its a dangerous game as it usually results in SPAM. I generally turn them off and opt for social media interaction, less spam, more moderation, and less trolling.

Trackbacks are ways for one site to notify another about an update. A trackback consists of a link and optionally a snippet of text. On many blogs you do not have to enable trackbacks and just like comments the trackbacks are moderated.

A trackback is a way to manually notify older blogging systems that you have linked to one of their posts. In turn, the other post may choose to link to your work in a “mentioned by” – or similar – section.
