- Ensure that your core and plugins are up to date
- have an offsite remote backup of your website. Never rely on Hosting provider backup system.
- Always use FTPS or SFTP(SSH)

To handle Brute force attacks, wps-hide is a popular choice.

Hello,

You may not think your site has anything worth being hacked for, but websites are compromised all the time. The majority of website security breaches are not to steal your data or mess with your website layout, but instead attempts to use your server as an email relay for spam, or to set up a temporary web server, normally to serve files of an illegal nature.

Here are our few tips to help keep you and your site safe online.

1. Keep software up to date
2. Protect against XSS attacks
3. Watch out for SQL injection
4. Beware of error messages
5. Check your passwords
6. Avoid file uploads
7. Use HTTPS
8. Get website security tools

There are some further steps you can take to manually try to compromise your site by altering POST/GET values. A debugging proxy can assist you here as it allows you to intercept the values of an HTTP request between your browser and the server.
