Why the robots.txt file is important. The robots.txt file, also known as the robots exclusion protocol or standard, is a text file that tells web robots (most often search engines) which pages on your site to crawl. It also tells web robots which pages not to crawl.

Hi Friends,
Robots.txt is mainly implemented to manage Googlebot traffic to the website, and at times to keep a page off Google (depending on the file type). You can’t hide a webpage with the help of robots.txt but can keep out media files or resource files such as unimportant script or style files.
A robots.txt file lives at the root of your website. So, for site xyz.com, the robots.txt file lives at http:/www.xyz.com/robots.txt. A robots.txt file consists of one or more rules. Each rule blocks (or allows) access for a given crawler to a specified file path in that website.

Robots.txt file is a very simple but a very powerful tool in our hand to protect our web pages, particular directory of our website from getting indexed in search engines.
We can also block bots of a particular search engine through robots.txt file.

Robots.txt is a text file that lists webpages which contain instructions for search engines robots. The file lists webpages that are allowed and disallowed from search engine crawling.
