The index is the database with which search engines like Google store and retrieve data when a user types a query into the search engine. Before it decides which web pages to show from the index and in what order, search engines apply algorithms to help rank those web pages.

Crawling and indexing are two distinct things and this is commonly misunderstood in the SEO industry. Crawling means that Googlebot looks at all the content/code on the page and analyzes it. Indexing means that the page is eligible to show up in Google's search results. They aren't mutually inclusive.

Crawling means the search engine robot crawl or fetch the web pages while Indexing means search engine robot crawl the web pages, saved the information and it appear in the search engine.

In the SEO field crawling is the process of gathering information about your site by search bot. Depending on quality of your site bot ranks it in organic search results.

Indexing contain the information on all the websites that Google (or any other search engine) was able to find. If a website is not in a search engine's index, users will not be able to find it. It is the source data in Google's index that ultimately determines the value of different search terms and keywords.
