I will try to give you a general overview :
It's an operating system just like any other ‘Windows' ,but comes with
Added security features.
Extra roles such as an IIS (Web server - A place where you can host your web application/backend).
FTP server - It functions as a file server.
Product development platform.
Server manager - It helps to manage all the roles and features of the O.S.
So in a nutshell, its just another O.S. with few extra functionalities, higher reliability snd better support.
The latest version of it is Windows Server 2019.

Diana

Windows Server is a family of server class operating systems developed by Microsoft.
Microsoft entered into the enterprise world with the NT 3.1 Advanced server. The most recent build being Windows Server 2016 Technical preview 5. The last commercially released server operating system from Microsoft is Windows Server 2012 R2. About one-third of the entire servers on the world wide web run on Windows.
Windows has evolved as a very rich operating system both for developers and for the enterprise, offering great functionality and support for the end user.
NT 4 was a great OS released during the late 90s, providing advanced functionality like remote desktop and including major improvements which later form the base for Server 2003. Features like System policies and policy editors, Cryptographic APIs and telephony support were introduced in NT 4.0 and improved on further operating systems.
The latest available OS - Windows Server 2016 Technical preview 5 is way more advanced with vast improvements in virtualization , storage technologies. reliability and security.

Windows dedicated server (https://www.ewebguru.com/dedicatedserver.php): Windows dedicated server is also an individual server wherein you will have a dedicated IP address and the entire server cannot be partitioned. You pay rent for the entire web space irrespective of usage. It is quite costly but very secure as you will receive a private nameserver. Only if you go for a managed Windows dedicated server, during downtimes, the service provider will be able to support you with files backup.
