As the name suggests, on-page optimization includes SEO friendly practices that is performed on the website/web page itself. Some of the most commonly used on page SEO operations may include:
- Optimizing meta data (Title, description etc)
- Ensuring proper use of H1, H2, H3 , ALT, TITLE tag etc
- Fixing HTML error etc
At the other hand, off-page optimization includes SEO techniques and practices that you do outside of your website. Example may include:
- Link Building through guest posting
- Sharing your contents on other social media platforms
- promoting your page/website on you tube etc
In order to get the best results and remain on top of search results, you have to stay focused on both on-page and off-page SEO practices.
Hope it helps!
