XML Sitemap is a special file containing pages that you want to be indexed by search engines and located in the website's root directory. One file can contain up to 49 999 links, and its size should be less than 50 MB. If the website has 50,000 or more pages, several XML Sitemaps are created.

XML sitemaps are just text files marked up with tags that identify types of data. The URL for an XML sitemap is typically at the root of a domain — for example, www.example.com/sitemap.xml — ready for bots to access.

In simple terms, an XML sitemap is a list of your website's URLs. It acts as a roadmap to tell search engines what content is available and how to reach it. In the example above, a search engine will find all nine pages in a sitemap with one visit to the XML sitemap file.

An XML (Extensible Markup Language) Sitemap is a text file used to detail all URLs on a website. It can include extra information (metadata) on each URL, with details of when they were last updated, how important they are and whether there are any other versions of the URL created in other languages. All of this is done to help the search engines crawl your website more efficiently, allowing any changes to be fed to them directly, including when a new page is added or an old one removed.
