Before we dive right into it, I’ll start of with a little bit of history to put things into perspective.

I started to get interested in SEO about 10 years ago. Back-in-the-day things were pretty clear, the more links the better the rankings. With links and especially anchor text being such a obvious mayor ranking factor in Googles algorithm, opportunities where there to abuse it.

Besides the direct effect this update has had on the web, the physiologic effect has probably been mush bigger and resulted into people being pretty cautious when linking out.
