The segment is a subset of data which you would like to see for a specific part only.

Example: Today you would like to know, what is happening in the US at a particular time who are coming directly on to your website?

Usually, the segment will help you get the set of audience who are actually qualifying your conditions.

Now, what is the benefit of it? How can we leverage the usage of segments?

Create 2 different segments and compare them to see the difference
Create an audience to perform remarketing
Segments once you create, can be applied to all the reports to check how each report is showing

A segment is a subset of your Analytics data. For example, of your entire set of users, one segment might be users from a particular country or city. ... Segments let you isolate and analyze those subsets of data so you can examine and respond to the component trends in your business.

A segment helps you to narrow down the aggregated data Google Analytics shows, into data you want to see and need, to answer a specific question you have. You can use that segment throughout the sections, the segment doesn't get lost when switching between sections.

In Google Analytics a segment is a way to specify the data you’re seeing in every standard view. Google Analytics just throws it all in there, on one big pile of data. This means that when you’re looking at a standard view in Google Analytics you see: ‘all sessions of all visitors’, you see: total revenue, all pages, average time on page of all users, the landing pages of all visitors.

In Google Analytics, segments are subsets of data which you can create to compare onsite behavior. In other words, you can create subsets of traffic (samples below) and then compare segment behavior for all the typical Google Analytics reports.
