It is the domain that was visited just before someone visited your site. It could be that people visited a site such as google.com and then clicked on a link to your site—then google.com would show up as a referring domain.

Referring domains are websites from which the target website or web page has one or more backlinks. For example, if a web page has a backlink from the New York Times, then it has one referring domain. If it has a link from the New York Times and Forbes, that it has two referring domains.

A referring domain is where your backlinks are coming from, and backlinks are the links on the websites that link back to your site.

Referring domains, also known as “linking domains,” are external websites that direct visitors to your site. These domains contain backlinks that drive traffic and views to your specific web pages.

A Referring Domain is a website from which a Backlink is received. For example, if website A links to Website B, then Website B has a Backlink from Website A (the referring domain). The value of a Referring Domain depends on its Domain Authority, an important ranking signal for search engines.

A referring domain—which is also sometimes called a linking domain—is a website that links out to another website whose backlink profile you analyze. Every referring domain can have one or multiple links to a website. So, if every domain in your backlink profile links out to you just once, the number of your acquired referring domains and backlinks will be equal. However, those occasions are really rare as, normally, when you build a lasting partnership with a business, you’ll get backlinks from their website on multiple occasions.
