A referral can be a link that isn't from the crawlable web, i.e., a link in an email, from facebook or some other social network which the search engines can not index, from a mobile app, from a link in a spreadsheet, pdf etc. A backlink is a link to a target site from a page on the web.

Hi Friends,
Referral Links: A referral can be a link that isn't from a crawlable web. For example, a link in an email or from Facebook.

Referring domain is where your backlinks are coming from, and backlinks are the links on the websites that link back to your site. Think of the referring domain as a phone number and backlinks as the number of times you've gotten a call from that particular number.

Referral marketing is the method of promoting products or services to new customers through referrals, usually word of mouth. Such referrals often happen spontaneously but businesses can influence this through appropriate strategies.
