Crawling is the process by virtue of which the search engines gather information about websites on world wide web (new / old / updates etc.) .

The crawlers are also known as spiders or bots , they visit website and send information to their respective parent websites.

This is where search engines "crawl" your website from the top down and follow all links while analyzing content. This helps them develop a sitemap or "outline" of your website and how it pertains to specific searches or inquiries online.

This is important because if you have broken links or the structure of your site doesn't make sense to search engines - it's more than likely not going to make sense to users. Nonetheless, they rank you lower to avoid a bad experience for their users.
