Which video editing software would you recommend? Struggling to find the one, not for all money. Any experience, mates?

Finding a video editor is a very personal process. Professionals use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos all the time, but those are commercial solutions in the $2K price range. On the lower/free end, I can only suggest checking a good website for alternatives https://wave.video. I use it permanently now.

In your case, I think that the problem is most likely in the wrong burning of DVD and SD. It is not enough to use the built-in software to burn a video to a disk. It requires a full-fledged DVD burner to work with various formats. I worked with different video burners, but I was impressed only by the software from Movavi which also includes a video editor (https://www.movavi.com/). Thus, you can immediately convert and process your video sequence after burning.
