Whatever SEO project you are doing must be done in steps and the steps have to be done in order. The 2 most common mistakes i see when i am dealing with clients who have either had BAD SEO done or NO SEO done is their site was not built with the on page and on site SEO factors done the best way they could for their top keywords. But honestly the biggest more common mistake i see is businesses and even SEO companies doing the keyword research wrong and then ranking them for these wrong keywords that either will not convert or is not buyer keyword type traffic. This also goes back to on page SEO because then the on page is done for the wrong keywords too. Ranking for a wrong keyword this also effects bounce rate, a very high bounce rate tells google your site is not as relevant to the search as Google originally thought so they bump you down. Lastly I see people going after huge competition keywords with a new site or site with no SEO and very little content — then they expect to rank high on page one very quickly when they haven’t got a prayer. A site has to be built up over time to appear natural and gain trust and authority then the site can rank for the higher competition keywords.
