Clickbait is a sensationalized headline that encourages you to click a link to an article, image, or video. Instead of presenting objective facts, clickbait headlines often appeal to your emotions and curiosity. Once you click, the website hosting the link earns revenue from advertisers, but the actual content is usually of questionable quality and accuracy. Websites use clickbait to draw in as many clicks as possible, thus increasing their ad revenue.

Click bait describes web content whose sole focus is generating online advertising revenue at the expense of content quality or accuracy and often relies on shocking or inflammatory headlines, which are now often associated with “fake news.” There is an increased disdain for click bait and its cyber security threats because a large number of these links are spam-related or contain viruses. It has been well reported that Facebook is working to eliminate click bait from their feeds in an attempt to reduce the potential threat to their audience.
