Externalbacklinks: Backlinks in general are links from other websites pointing towards your site. So that your site get traffic Google make your site top in serach results related your service.
Referral domains: Referral traffic is Google's method of reporting visits that came to your site from sources outside of its search engine. When someone clicks on a hyperlink to go to a new page on a different website, Analytics tracks the click as a referral visit to the second site.

Referring domains is similar to any other backlink analysis tool. It's a list of domains that are linking to your website. You can also sort the results by Trust Flow, Citation Flow, Top level domain and more. And if you click on the linked number under “backlinks”, you can see the exact pages that are linking to you

The “External Backlinks” count is where the strength of our historical data comes in. The Graph on the search page shows the profile of links discovery at page level. For Majestic you can see a large spike in backlinks around June last year. This is where the free registration again yields benefit.

So a referring domain is where your backlinks are coming from, and backlinks are the links on the websites that link back to your site. Think of the referring domain as a phone number and backlinks as the number of times you've gotten a call from that particular number.

“Referring domains” suggests the number of root-level domains links that your site gets.
And “External backlinks” refers to the total number of backlinks to your site.

In Majestic, referring domains refers to no. of root level domains links to your site. External backlinks are total link counts from referring domains to your site may have multiple links from same domains are counted. ... For example, in the URL attractive web solutions is the domain name.
