The free ones though usually contain the hosts name so they don't sound like your own domain eg xyzplumbers.freehost.com as opposed to xyzplumbers.com - Are you really that hard up you can't afford approx £10 per year to renew a domain?

Yes it is possible to get a free TLD. But you do not own the domain but are instead the primary user of the domain. If you are looking for a free domain then look at a place called Freenom they offer free TLD. The only problem is that you will have to renew the domain every year. (But it is free to Register and is Free to Renew).
