Did Google change their layout?

Hi Friend,
By removing ads on the right hand side but adding another ad on top (bringing the total from three to four) they have changed the experience for brands and consumers. Google's search results used to be simple: search results down the middle of the page, ads on the right. A few years ago Google tried putting some ads above the search results, and these worked really well for advertisers. Ads in those positions get clicked a higher proportion of the time, driving more valuable traffic and earning Google more money. But doing so pushes the "natural" search results further down the page.

Recent changes to Google's search layout were rolled out in early January 2020. Those changes created quite a bit of controversy and resulted in an unusual turnaround by Google. The changes were even reported on by the New York Times in a piece January 31, 2020.

This week Google have expanded a long-running experiment on desktop search results, and rolled the change out to all users. By removing ads on the right hand side but adding another ad on top (bringing the total from three to four) they have changed the experience for brands and consumers.

The New Google Search Layout Launched. ... Because Google is a user-based company, a lot of these changes happen in order to make it a better user experience. This change was first rolled out for mobile users last year. Starting in January 2020, Google launched the new layout design for desktop users as well.
