The most popular search engine, Google, was invented by the Soviet born Sergey Brin and American Larry Page in 1998. They named it Google, after the Googol. The Googol is the term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name itself was chosen to represent the infinite amount of information that the search engine aimed to organise.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Larry was born in Lansing, Michigan and Sergey in Moscow, Soviet Union both in 1973. Larry and Sergey first met at Stanford University, one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions located in Palo Alto, California. A recent University of Michigan graduate, Larry 24 years old at the time, was considering attending Stanford for graduate school. While attending a Stanford student orientation, Larry was hosted by Sergey, a volunteer, to tour the campus.

The name of Google is derived from the number googol, which is equal to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros (1 x 10^100). Backrub was the original name for the search engine until Sergey Brin and Larry Page rebranded the company as Google, Inc.

Back in 1996, before Google even existed as an entity, Page and Brin were already making up nerdy names for search engines. According to Stanford's David Koller, and Google's own website, Page and Brin's 1996 foray into the world of search engines was initially called “BackRub.” Yes, BackRub.
