Most traditional SEO's would strongly advise against any kind of link exchanges.

Reciprocal links occur when two websites exchange backlinks to each other, usually for SEO ... I knew some SEO theory, but I had yet to put it into practice. ... I was an SEO newbie and my moral compass wasn't well-tuned.

Yes, if you do link exchange between high authority thematic sites.

Most traditional SEO's (especially those who aren't deeply involved in the link building space) would strongly advise against any kind of link exchanges. It's true, exchanging and swapping links is an extremely divisive topic in the SEO and link building community, and most experts prefer to use other strategies.

The best way to know if reciprocal links do more harm than good is with an experiment:

- Create a bunch of websites
- Build similar backlink profiles for them all
- Wait until they start ranking in Google for some keywords
- Build a particular number of reciprocal links to some of those websites. Leave a few of them intact as your control group. Observe what happens next.
