RankBrain is a component of Google's core algorithm which uses machine learning (the ability of machines to teach themselves from data inputs) to determine the most relevant results to search engine queries. Pre-RankBrain, Google utilized its basic algorithm to determine which results to show for a given query.

The key purpose of RankBrain is to act as a query processor, embedding written and verbal search strings into mathematical vectors. Google engineers periodically retrain the system and look to improve the models it uses – in this sense, the machine learning element is carried out offline rather than on real-time data.

RankBrain is a core part of Google's search algorithm. By leveraging machine learning, it helps Google understand how specific web pages relate to certain concepts and, in turn, serve web pages that are relevant to a searcher's query but don't include the query's exact words or phrases.

RankBrain is more of a method by which the search engine classifies search results instead of a signal or a ranking factor. Rather, it’s the addition to Google’s search engine algorithm known as the hummingbird. Its databases are filled with data and information that are converted into certain mathematical categories. When Google encounters an unknown search query, it searches its database and tries to interpret it by finding expressions and concepts similar to the search query.
