Hello All,

What is 301 redirect?

Hello Cyril,

301 is an HTTP status code sent by a web server to a browser. A 301 signals a permanent redirect from one URL to another, meaning all users that request an old URL will be automatically sent to a new URL. A 301 redirect passes all ranking power from the old URL to the new URL, and is most commonly used when a page has been permanently moved or removed from a website.

301 is one of many possible HTTPS status some of which you have probably heard of . you can think of a 301 redirect like a mail forwarder . once you moved a piece of content away from a specific URL , anyone who tries to visit it will receive a 404 - page not found message .

A 301 redirect indicates the permanent moving of a web page from one location to another.

The 301 part refers to the HTTP status code of the redirected page.

Example: blog.ahrefs.com redirects to ahrefs.com/blog

In simple terms, a 301 redirect tells the browser: “This page has moved permanently. This is the new location and we don’t intend on moving it back.” To which the browser responds: “Sure thing! I’ll send the user there right now!”

That’s why if you try to visit blog.ahrefs.com, it won’t happen.

You’ll end up at ahrefs.com/blog instead.

Hi Friends,

301 redirect is the most efficient and Search Engine Friendly method for webpage redirection. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently.

A 301 divert is an extremely durable divert that passes full connection value (positioning capacity) to the diverted page. 301 alludes to the HTTP status code for this sort of divert. On many occasions, the 301 divert is the best strategy for executing diverts on a site.
