Page speed measures the amount of time it takes for content on a particular webpage to load. It's easy to get this term confused with other words related to site optimization like “site speed,” which refers to the average loading time of more than one sample page on a given site.

Well, the term page speed is pretty obvious to understand, so not getting into it.
Role of Page Speed in SEO:
A fast-loading page is a must for any website. And after the Google speed algorithm, it is one of the direct ranking factors. Even from a user perspective, if your page is not loading fast, the bounce rate will increase, and dwell time will decrease; this will indirectly affect your rankings.
How to increase page speed?
Enable compression.
Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML.
Reduce redirects.
Remove render-blocking JavaScript
Leverage browser caching.
Improve server response time.
Use a content distribution network.
Optimize images.

Page speed is very important. Search engines look at how fast your website loads and how long people are on the site. If your site is slow and people leave before it loads or do not find whatn they are looking for and saty on site search engines look at this and call it bounce rate.
The more people who go to a site and leave because of slow page speed or can not find content they searched for the less search engines rank your site.

What are page speed and its role in SEO?
Page speed measures the amount of time it takes for content on a particular webpage to load. It’s easy to get this term confused with other words related to site optimization like “site speed,” which refers to the average loading time of more than one sample page on a given site. Page speed, on the other hand, specifically refers to the loading time of a singular webpage. Many factors ultimately determine page speed, including server quality, file sizes, image compression, and more.
If you have any hopes for ranking your site high on Google searches, then you should focus on improving your site’s page speed. Page speed insights can give you an accurate idea of how your site will perform with search engines.
To claim that coveted spot on the first page of Google, your page speed will need to compete with the loading time of the top 10 organic page results. Otherwise, your page will be relegated to the second or third page of Google where most searchers never venture.
Google puts a premium on page speed because it’s a way of determining a site’s quality and gauging the user experience. Sites that perform well with this metric are rewarded with a high ranking. When optimized, page speed leads to more traffic from organic searches and, ultimately, a more successful website overall.

What are page speed and its role in SEO?
A slow loading website can hurt your Google rankings.
The question is: how does Google determine your site’s loading speed? Do they look at how long it takes for 100% of the page to load? Or TTFB?
They haven’t made any official statements on it. But considering that they report on all of these metrics in their PageSpeed Insights tool tells me that they probably use a combination of different page speed measurements

What are page speed and its role in SEO?
But speed is relative. It depends on so many factors such as the website’s performance, the server’s performance, the particular web page you’re on, the connection type, the user’s internet service provider, the internet package, the device’s processing power, the Browser, what the user is doing at that point, how many apps are running and so on.
However, we can only work with what we can work, which is our website and our server. We don’t really have control over the rest.

What are page speed and its role in SEO?
Page speed is defined as the length of time it takes to display all the content on a specific page or the length of time it takes for a browser to receive a web server’s first byte (or, to put it in less technical terms, page speed is how long it takes for the browser to receive the first batch of information from the server).
Every page element — its HTML code, CSS that styles page elements, various JavaScript files, images, videos and other multimedia and so much more — affects the page speed. In fact, anything from an element's size (measured in kilobytes) to the speed of the web server they are hosted on will affect the page speed.
Page speed is measured on desktop and mobile devices separately. This is because of technology differences between the two, resulting in a different experience for desktop and mobile users.

Page Speed is how long it takes for a web page to load and show results to the users. It includes all the content including pictures, buttons, videos etc. Page loading speed is determined by various factors such as server, filesize, image size, script size, too much use of CSS, too many plugins, etc.
It is a very important SEO factor as we all know that Google prefers anything that enhances the user experience to be better, indexing them faster.
So if your pages speed is good, there are more chances for it to rank better.
