Google Hummingbird is a new search platform introduced in September 2013. This update revolutionized Google search because it helped to bring meaning to the words that people were typing in their queries. Instead of just matching vocabulary in the query to vocabulary in the search results, the new algorithm works to understand the meaning of the query and match it with relevant results.

Hummingbird update also try to list the more popular search terms even when your type something more specific. It will list terms that have some of the words you are searching but they are not always what you want. I think it took some traffic away from long tail keywords in search results

On October 4, 2013, Google rolled out its largest search algorithm change since 2003, dubbed the “Hummingbird” update. It was so named because of its focus on more conversational, natural language search results. Hummingbird is machine-learned and fine-tuned to better understand meaning behind keywords and how to answer questions that are input into the search engine. Hummingbird is a nonstop upgrade for Google– instead of monthly or quarterly updates, it’s part of an “always learning” mentality that allows the algorithm to constantly adapt and be refined based on new data.
