Keyword cannibalization occurs when you have too many identical or similar keywords spread throughout the content on your website. As a result, a search engine like Google can't discern which content to rank higher. This means that sometimes it will give a higher ranking to the web page you don't mean to prioritize.

Keyword cannibalization is not always a problem that needs to be fixed. In some cases, it’s an opportunity to reach a wider audience.

If your site has several blog posts or articles that rank for the same search query in Google, you have keyword cannibalization. It may be because the topics they cover are too similar or because you optimized them for the same keyphrase. Your posts and articles won't rank as well if you optimize them for the same search queries. For a specific search query, Google usually displays 1 or 2 results from the same domain. High authority domains may display 3 results.

If you have several website pages listed for same keywords in results one above the other than you not getting the most out of your website or blog. Each page should be for certain keywords and terms and even similar content should use different keywords to reach larger amount of people and search terms.

Keyword cannibalization is when multiple pages on a website target the same or similar keywords and compete against each other to hurt the site’s organic performance.
For example, let’s say we have two pages about technical SEO. If we could get more organic traffic overall by combining the two pages into one, that’s a cannibalization issue. The existence of those two pages is eating away at our organic performance.
