It depends on what you look at for rank. Your website might be showing up for more results in search engines and not ranking as good for the ones your looking at.

If your website is ranking lower but getting more traffic your ahead. Rank should give you more traffic because your listed high in search results but you might now be listed for more search results and get more traffic.

You can also get traffic from other sites beside search results so forums and videos or articles can drive traffic also.
