A 301 signals a permanent redirect from one URL to another, meaning all users that request an old URL will be automatically sent to a new URL. A 301 redirect passes all ranking power from the old URL to the new URL, and is most commonly used when a page has been permanently moved or removed from a website.

A 301 redirect is a way of sending website visitors to a live URL, when the one they originally requested has been removed. A redirect should point to the most relevant or similar live page to the one that is no longer needed, this ensures the best user experience for the visitor and means that any backlink value is directed correctly and not lost with the old page.

A 301 redirect indicates the permanent moving of a web page from one location to another.

The 301 part refers to the HTTP status code of the redirected page.

Example: blog.ahrefs.com redirects to ahrefs.com/blog

In simple terms, a 301 redirect tells the browser: “This page has moved permanently. This is the new location and we don’t intend on moving it back.” To which the browser responds: “Sure thing! I’ll send the user there right now!”

That’s why if you try to visit blog.ahrefs.com, it won’t happen.

You’ll end up at ahrefs.com/blog instead.

The HTTP response status code 301 Moved Permanently is used for permanent redirecting, meaning that links or records returning this response should be updated. The new URL should be provided in the Location field and included with the response.
